Not certain which pathway suits you? Our Introduction to Drones course offers a structured starting point, designed for newcomers and those looking to strengthen their operational understanding.

What training is right for your operations?

The type of training or certification required depends on how you intend to deploy your UAV capability. Whether you’re establishing a commercial drone programme or expanding existing operations, there is a course designed to match your operational and regulatory requirements.

Operating commercially?

If you’re deploying drones for commercial purposes in New Zealand, you will typically need to operate under the appropriate Civil Aviation Authority
(CAA) framework. This may involve holding a recognised remote pilot qualification and operating under a certified organisation with the required CAA
approvals (e.g. Part 102 certification).

Flying recreationally?

No specific licence is required for recreational drone use in New Zealand. However, you must comply with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules and
standard safety requirements — always refer to your drone’s manual and current CAA guidance before flying.

Operating on your own property?

No specific licence is required for recreational drone use in New Zealand. However, you must comply with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules and
standard safety requirements — always refer to your drone’s manual and current CAA guidance before flying.

Flight School FAQ’s

No specific licence is required for recreational drone use in New Zealand. However, you must comply with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules and follow

  • Remote pilot qualification: This applies to the individual pilot and confirms they have the knowledge and practical competency to conduct
    commercial UAV operations.
  • Organisational certification (e.g. Part 102 approval): This applies to the business or operator, authorising the organisation to conduct more
complex or higher-risk drone operations under Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) oversight.

In simple terms, the pilot qualification is for the individual, while organisational certification applies to the company operating the drones.

  • Introduction to Drones: 1 day (theory and practical)
  • Basic Flight Techniques: 1~2 days (blended online theory and in-person flight training)
  • In New Zealand, landowners may conduct certain drone operations on their own property under Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Part 101 rules, provided
aircraft weight limits and standard operating conditions are met. Larger aircraft or higher-risk operations may require additional certification or Part 102
approval. It’s important to review current CAA requirements to ensure your specific operation remains compliant.
  • Conducting commercial drone operations without the appropriate Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval can result in regulatory enforcement action,
including fines. It may also affect the validity of your insurance coverage.
Ensuring you have the correct training and certification protects both your organisation and your clients. If you’re unsure which pathway applies to you, get
in touch to discuss your requirements.
